Are you addicted to avocado toast? Looking for a new twist for your habit? Easy spicy avocado toast two ways to the rescue! One version is more exotic with shichimi togarashi seasoning (spicy, citrusy, sesame), the other is more traditional with crushed red pepper flakes and diced tomatoes (spicy, toasty, juicy). Try them both!
Easy Spicy Avocado Toast Two Ways
Are you addicted to avocado toast? Me too. Maybe you’ve been making avocado toast the same way for years, maybe you’ve never made it (or even tried it!). I’m here to tell you, it’s a phenomenon for a reason. Avocado toast is the most basic of recipes, but it’s one of the best ideas anyone ever had. It’s about great ingredients and assembly, like an open faced sandwich, or bruschetta (Mmmmmmm, bruschetta….. another favorite!). Easy spicy avocado toast two ways is a good illustration of how little changes can make something simple seem exciting. And it’s fun to change things up every now and then, right?
In my humble opinion (feel free to disagree with me), there are three things that make all versions of avocado toast great, besides the toast and avocado, of course. Those three are mayonnaise, fresh lime juice and kosher salt (or any larger flaked salt). If you’ve got that, then you can experiment with other toppings and seasonings and know it’s going to be good.
For these versions of avocado toast, we’re experimenting with slightly spicy, and really flavorful seasonings. The first seasoning, shichimi togarashi, might seem exotic, while the other, crushed red pepper flakes, is more traditional. And they’re both delicious.
Let’s Get Spicy
If you’re like me and you love trying new ingredients (one of my 2019 intentions!), you’re going to fall in love with shichimi togarashi. If you’ve ever had spicy edamame at a restaurant, odds are they sprinkled togarashi on top. That’s how I first tried the spice blend and I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s a blend of chilies, citrus and sesame seeds and it’s awesome. You can find it in most spice aisles these days, or order it online, or make your own blend! However you get it, you won’t believe how good it tastes on your avocado toast.
The other spicy avocado toast version uses something you probably already have in your cupboard, crushed red pepper flakes. I use these all the time, and not just on pizza. They add a nice hint of spice to all kinds of soups and stews, and my favorite quick spaghetti sauce. It’s also a great idea to add some diced tomatoes to the avocado toast with the crushed red pepper flakes. The tomatoes are optional, but there’s just something perfect about the combination of tomatoes and crushed peppers.
It’s Time to Make the Toast
With so few ingredients, your spicy avocado toast is going to come together in no time. While your toast is in the toaster, you’ll split open your avocado, remove the pit (carefully!), and slice each half into 1/4 inch slices. Have your mayo, lime half, kosher salt and spices ready to go.
When the toast is ready, spread each slice with a thin layer of mayo. Now you’ll take a large spoon and scoop out your avocado slices. Place the slices from each half on each piece of toast. Once the slices are layered on the toast, smash them gently into the bread with a fork. This step is important for two reasons. First, the avocado won’t slide off the toast when you take a bite. Second, the little divets created by the fork will fill up with the good stuff to come!
Take your lime half and give a generous squeeze over each piece of toast. Next sprinkle with kosher salt, don’t skip this step! The salt make the avocado and lime sing. Finally you’ll sprinkle the togarashi or crushed red peppers and tomatoes on top. If you’re using tomatoes, make sure to give a final little sprinkle of salt on top of those. Now: Take. A. Bite. and sigh…. yum! So simple, so delicious.
And, of course, if you’re in the mood for a little something extra, it never hurts to put an egg on it. One of my very first posts was this avocado egg toast! I eat it all the time, but now I add a little spice first.
Good Stuff for Making Avocado Toast
- Kosher salt: the larger salt crystals really do make things taste better!
- My favorite brand of shichimi togarashi: It’s got a great balance of chilies, citrus and sesame seeds.
- Crushed red pepper flakes: You probably already have these in your spice rack. (P.S. – If they’ve been sitting there for a couple of years, it’s time to refresh your supply!)
- And this is toast, so a toaster is always a good idea. I like this one because it’s cute and retro like a Smeg brand toaster, but a quarter of the price.
