Peanut butter and jam oatmeal – a classic flavor combination makes a delicious breakfast appearance. Peanut butter powder (what?) works it’s magic in old fashioned oats simmered on the stove. The jam becomes a sweet finishing touch, with some fresh berries and almond milk for good measure. Talk about a breakfast of champions!
Peanut Butter and Jam Oatmeal:
Peanut butter and jelly! Flavors you probably fell in love with as a child and still enjoy today. Now, I wouldn’t turn down a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for breakfast, but a bowl of peanut butter and jam oatmeal is my new favorite take on the classic.
Have you tried peanut butter powder yet? That’s what you’ll use to give your oatmeal a delicious peanut butter flavor without changing it’s texture. It’s basically dried and powdered peanuts with no added sugar or oil. And, bonus! It gives you the peanut butter flavor for 90% fewer calories than adding regular peanut butter. It might sound a little strange, but you’re going to love it.
And how about two times the jam flavor? First with a jam (or jelly) drizzle for a more intense flavor, then with berries to bring tart freshness. I love raspberry jam, so that’s what I used. But you can use any flavor that floats your boat and tastes good with peanut butter.
The Ingredients:
So let’s talk a little more about this peanut butter powder. Why wouldn’t you just use regular peanut butter? You can! But peanut butter powder has about 90% fewer calories and a 1/3 less fat for starters. It will also last forever (or a really long time) in your pantry. And sometimes you don’t want to add the moisture or texture of traditional peanut butter to your recipe. Peanut butter powder is also full of protein. I use it in smoothies all the time! You can also add it to pancakes, quick breads, brownies, iced coffee, energy bites and so on.
The ingredient list for the peanut butter and jam oatmeal is short and sweet. Old fashioned oats (don’t use quick or instant oats), peanut butter powder, kosher salt, brown sugar, jam or jelly of your choice, fresh berries, and milk of your choice, I used almond milk. (I did forget to include the brown sugar in the picture above – oops!)
The Preparation
Don’t be scared off by the thought of making oatmeal on the stove, it’s super easy! It’s a 2 to 1 ratio of water to oats, so halving or doubling this recipe is also a piece of cake…. Which makes me wonder, when something is easy, why is it referred to as being a “piece of cake”? Cake is awesome, but it’s not easy to make. Maybe the phrase for something being easy should be it’s a “bowl of oatmeal”?
For this recipe you’ll bring your water to a boil, then stir in your oatmeal, peanut butter powder and salt. You ALWAYS want to add a little salt to your oatmeal as it’s cooking. It does magical things. If you skip it, the oatmeal will be bland as can be. Simmer for 15 minutes or so until the water is absorbed, then you’ll add the brown sugar and maybe another 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt to bring out the peanut butter flavor even more.
Now for the fun part, adding the toppings! Start by pouring the milk around the oatmeal in the bowl. Next you’ll swirl on the jam. I think it’s a good idea to thin out the jam with a little water to make it drizzle-able.
And finally, you’ll sprinkle on some berries to match your jam. If you’re feeling rebellious, the berries don’t have to match your jam. Put blueberries on your raspberry jam for all I care. Okay, I do care, I think the berries should match the jam.
However you put on the toppings, it’s going to be delicious!
The Payoff
Peanut butter and jam oatmeal for the win!
p.s. – If you now love oatmeal and are looking for another delicious, easy idea, this one’s a “bowl of oatmeal”! – cinnamon apple old fashioned oatmeal.

Description
A delicious, hearty take on a classic combination! Peanut butter powder is the magic ingredient.
Ingredients
Oatmeal Ingredients:
- 1 cup old fashioned oats (not instant or quick oats)
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus 1/4 teaspoon for finishing
- 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) peanut butter powder
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
Toppings:
- 1/2 cup almond milk, or whatever kind of milk you like
- 2 tablespoons raspberry jam, or whatever kind of jam/jelly you like, mixed with 1 tablespoon of water
- fresh berries, I used raspberries
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, bring 2 cups of water and 1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low. Add the old fashioned oats and peanut butter powder and stir to combine. Make sure the oats don’t boil over while the heat reduces.
- Simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes. You want the oats to be tender, but not mushy, with most of the liquid absorbed.
- While the oats are cooking, stir the jam and water together in a small dish. It should be a good consistency to drizzle.
- When the oats are done, add the brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of kosher salt, stirring to combine.
- To serve, place half the peanut butter oats in each dish. The drizzle with the thinned out jam, pour some almond milk around the oats, and top with fresh berries. Dig in!
Notes
Use whatever flavor jam, berries and milk you like!
